WE’RE TIRED OF IT TOO…
BUT WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE
THAT IT’S HERE IN QCPC
COVID-19 has been around for almost a year, and we are all rightfully tired of how it has changed our lives. Unfortunately, it’s not over yet. Arizona has one of the higher transmission rates, and Tucson’s hospitals are at full capacity this week.
QCPC members are not immune. It is no longer uncommon for one of our members or their spouses/partners to test positive. Within the last week, we had another member with a positive COVID test.
If you or someone with whom you share a home tests positive for COVID or shows the symptoms of COVID, you should not come to the QC pickleball courts until you can no longer spread COVID. You should also notify others with whom you have had significant contact, including Club members with whom you have played if there is any potential for transmission.
If you played pickleball with someone who has COVID, you should determine whether you must self-quarantine under CDC guidelines. This is dependent on the extent of “close contact.” Close contact is defined by the CDC as being within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes starting from 2 days before illness onset or, if asymptomatic, 2 days prior to a positive test.
The QCPC Board appreciates very much that Club members directly affected by COVID have acted responsibly to protect other members.
With COVID vaccines on the way, we can all look forward to a much better 2021. Until then, let’s hang in there and do what is necessary to keep our courts open and our fellow Club members safe.

Zoom meeting December 22nd at 1pm
on the new 2021 USA Pickleball Rules
Some of our Members have heard about the
new 2021 USA Pickleball rules update.
There are 125 new/updated rules
effective January 1st, 2021.
Our very own local USA Pickleball Ambassador
Lenny Friedman
will go over the major changes on a Zoom meeting
Tuesday, December 22nd at 1 pm.
see the information with link for the meeting
is listed below the list of rule changes:
Lenny will review the rule changes and answer any questions you might have. The Zoom meeting will be recorded and posted on the QCPC website for future viewing.
Here are the 3 major rule changes:
1. Service Lets (2020 Section 4.0 & 3.A.18) Removed Rules 4.O, 4.O.1, 4.O.2, & 4.O.3 and 3.A.18
Removed: The definition (3.A.18) and section 4 (Service Lets) have been removed. Starting in 2021, there will be no rule(s) governing service lets. Service Lets have been removed. It is noted that out of habit, both referees and players may sometimes habitually call a service let. If any player stops play because of a service let being called, that player/team will have committed a fault per rule 7.I
Meaning, that there are no more LETS on the serve. If during the serve, the ball hits the net but lands in the opponent's correct side of the court, and not in the kitchen, it is a playable ball. No more TAKEOVERS. If someone calls a FAULT and stops the play, they lose the serve, or if the opponents yell LET during the serve, the serving side gains a point. Or when the ball hits the net then lands in the kitchen, the server loses the serve.
2. Drop serves allowed. Serves may be hit after the ball bounces and with no restrictions on the nature of the swing. See a good video here.
Rule 4.A.8 New: ***Provisional Rule*** Drop Serve. In addition to the standard serve sequence described in Rules 4.A.1 to 4.A.7, players may opt to use an alternate “drop serve” method. A provisional rule means USA Pickleball will evaluate the rule for unintended or unexpected outcomes over the next year. Servers must release the ball from one of the server’s hands or dropped off the server’s paddle from any natural (un-aided) height and hit the ball after the ball bounces on the playing surface. The server’s release of the ball must be visible to the referee and the receiver. In matches without a referee, the server’s release of the ball must be visible to the receiver. A replay shall be called before the return of serve if the release of the ball is not visible. The rules for feet placement (4.A.2 and 4.L) still apply. The only downward acceleration imparted on the ball is that from gravity.
3. Asking about positions. Serving teams can now ask both whether they are the correct server and in the correct position.
Rule 4.B.9 Existing: Prior to the start of the service motion, to determine the correct server and correct service court, the serving team may ask the referee for the score and correct server. New: Before the serve occurs, the serving team may ask the referee for the score, correct server, correct position, and may challenge/confirm the called score. Any player on the serving team may ask any one or more of these questions.
